Chapter 46

Azrael

I’d asked myself what the actual fuck about a dozen times since the faery had dropped his bombshell. I had to hand it to Tabitha; she hadn’t shown any reaction to hearing Iridia’s name.

“Well, I certainly didn’t see that coming,” Michael mused as he dug through my refrigerator for something to drink.

“I can’t believe Zanthiel would involve himself in something like this,” I admitted.

“I know,” Michael replied as he looked over his shoulder. “He’s a nice guy. Everyone likes him. It’s always possible that whoever hired this guy is trying to set up Zanthiel.”

“Why would he do that?” I asked. “And for the record, I don’t think Zanthiel is a nice guy. That little fuck is just too lazy to do anything like this. At least, I thought he was too lazy.”

“Who is Zanthiel?” Tabitha asked.

“He’s the angel responsible for bringing the souls of dead animals to the afterlife,” I explained.

“Like the dead cats in your house?” she asked as she gestured to the two cats racing across the room.

“Yes,” I replied. “These cats have been with me for more than twenty years because the lazy little fuck never does his damn job. He can’t even come and pick up a couple of dead cats, yet I’m supposed to believe he had the drive to plan something like this? I don’t think so.”

“He’s not lazy,” Michael argued. “There is a lot for him to do.”

“His time isn’t often spent doing his job,” I stated. “We should have a word with him.”

“I should have a word with him,” Michael corrected me. “You need to go talk to the faery queen.”

“Me?” I asked. “What makes you think I know anything about this faery queen?”

Michael blew out a frustrated breath. “Don’t fuck with me, Azrael. I’ve seen your dog, and I know there are very few creatures who could create an immortal talking dog. It’s too much of a coincidence that there is a faery queen involved when you have had some contact with a faery. Something tells me you know where she is, and I am willing to overlook the fact that you are hiding her from me.”

“I’m not hiding her from you,” I told him. “Your conclusion is a huge jump. I’ve had Reaper for a long time, and you know I don’t have friends.”

“Cut the crap, Azrael,” he snapped. “I saw your reaction to her name. Talk to her and find out what this faery king wants from her and why.”

I let out a sigh. “Sometimes, I think I liked you better when you were so self-absorbed that you were oblivious to everything around you.”

Michael let out a bark of laughter. “You aren’t the only one. I’ll transport the prisoner to the faery realm before I have a word with Zanthiel. Much as I’d like to question this faery more, I should get him out of here before the other faeries find a way to track him.”

I nodded. “All right.”

Michael downed a bottle of water before heading off to grab the faery.
